Vimshottari Dasha Guide

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used predictive system in Vedic astrology. The name is derived from the Sanskrit word Vimshottari, which translates to "120". It is a planetary timeline system that outlines the periods (dashas) when specific planets will manifest their influence in your life over a 120-year cycle.

1. The 120-Year Planetary Cycle

Vimshottari assumes a human lifespan of 120 years, divided into nine segments ruled by the nine planets. The sequence of ruling planets and their durations is fixed:

• Ketu (South Node): 7 years
• Venus (Shukra): 20 years
• Sun (Surya): 6 years
• Moon (Chandra): 10 years
• Mars (Mangal): 7 years
• Rahu (North Node): 18 years
• Jupiter (Guru): 16 years
• Saturn (Shani): 19 years
• Mercury (Budh): 17 years

2. Calculating the Starting Dasha

Your starting dasha is determined by the exact longitude of the Moon at the time of your birth. The zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras (lunar constellations), each ruled by one of the nine planets. The Nakshatra the Moon is in at birth determines the first ruling planet, and the Moon's exact progress through that Nakshatra determines how much of the first period remains (the dasha balance).

3. Mahadasha and Antardasha

The system is nested to provide finer timing predictions:

• Mahadasha (Major Period): The main ruler of the phase (e.g., Jupiter Mahadasha lasting 16 years). This establishes the broad life themes and shifts.
• Antardasha or Bhukti (Sub-Period): Each major period is subdivided into nine sub-periods ruled by each of the planets in the same sequence (e.g., Jupiter-Saturn, Jupiter-Mercury). These sub-periods define shorter phases (typically months to a few years) that color and refine the themes of the Mahadasha.

4. Interpreting Dasha Effects

The impact of a dasha depends heavily on the planet's placement in your birth chart (its strength, sign, house, and relationships to other planets):

• A planet that is well-placed (e.g., exalted or ruling positive houses like the 1st, 5th, or 9th) will bring prosperity, learning, growth, or career advancement during its period.
• A planet that is weakened, combust, or ruling houses of challenge (like the 6th, 8th, or 12th) will trigger life lessons, transitions, obstacles, or shifts in focus.
