What is a Panchang?

A Panchang (Sanskrit: पञ्चाङ्ग, meaning "five limbs") is the Vedic almanac that describes five daily qualities of time derived from astronomical observation. These five elements are Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (birth star of the Moon), Yoga (a combined Sun-Moon quality), and Karana (half a Tithi). Together they define the energetic character of each moment throughout the day.

Unlike a Western calendar, which treats all moments of a given day as equivalent, the Panchang recognises that the quality of time shifts continuously as the Sun and Moon move through the sky. Muhurta — the art of electional astrology — uses the Panchang to identify windows that are naturally supportive for beginning important activities: starting a business, entering a new home, conducting a marriage ceremony, or initiating a spiritual practice.
